2015, Animal Reproduction ScienceCitation Excerpt :Research into the way in which epigenetic factors can modify functionality of the early embryo was stimulated by the discovery that in vitro culture of ovine embryos can result in the production of unusually large offspring (Walker et al., 1992a,b, 1996), a phenomenon now known to be due to epigenetic change to the IGF2R gene (Young et al., 2001). Enhanced foetal growth can also result from progesterone administered to ewes during the first few days of embryonic life (Kleemann et al., 1994, 2001). Little is known about the effects of progesterone on early developmental programming (Zambrano et al., 2014), although it is known that progesterone concentrations are inversely related to nutrition during the post ovulatory period (Parr, 1992).

(2001) reported that periods of rapid embryonic development were associated with increasing plasma P4 concentrations and BW because administration of P4 during early pregnancy of sheep enhanced fetal weight and crown-rump length. Using short-term P4 supplementation post-mating or shearing ewes in early pregnancy affected lambing rate and lamb weight at birth (Kenyon et al., 2005).
