A review on hot tearing of magnesium alloys
2016, Journal of Magnesium and AlloysCitation Excerpt :The effect of Ca content on the HTS of AZ91 is not given in detail in their study. Effect of RE on hot cracking behaviour of AZ31, AZ91, and AM60 was also studied [100]. Results show that the addition of RE increases the HTS of these commercial alloys.
Microstructure, microstructural stability and mechanical properties of sand-cast Mg-4Al-4RE alloy
2013, Materials CharacterizationCitation Excerpt :Phase identification of the alloy in question was supplemented with TEM, which confirms the presence of α-Mg solid solution, needle-shaped precipitates of the Al11RE3 phase (Fig. 8), polyhedral precipitates of the Al2RE phase (Fig. 9), and particles of the Al10RE2Mn7 phase (Fig. 10). The characteristic trait of the AE44 alloy is a lack of MgxAly, and MgxREy phases, which is due to the high chemical affinity of aluminum for REs [10]. Formation of the phases AlxREy (e.g., Al11RE3) and Al10RE2Mn7 around 540 °C [6] reduces the aluminum content in the liquid phase and prevents the Mg17Al12 phase from forming as a result of the eutectic reaction at 437 °C.
Influence of yttrium additions on the hot tearing susceptibility of magnesium-zinc alloys
2010, Materials Science and Engineering: ACitation Excerpt :Since the degree of thermal contraction is proportional to the TFR and here the structure is susceptible to HT, it seems reasonable to view the TFR as a rough measure of an alloy's hot tearing susceptibility (HTS). With regard to the HTS of magnesium alloys, various papers describe the effect of the respective chemical composition and relate it partly to the solidification path at the end of solidification [4] and to the time period where the solidifying alloy is vulnerable to HT [5–10], which in turn correspond approximately to the TFR. In the course of producing Mg–Zn–Ca(–Y) alloys via the direct chill casting route [11–13] the authors of this study observed a remarkable influence of the yttrium content on the alloy's HTS.
