Abstract

With the rapid development of nanotechnology, research interest in nanofibers has grown exponentially, especially for those prepared by electrospinning. Electrospun nanofibers are light weight with high surface-to-volume ratio, adjustable fiber diameter/morphology, and well-controlled functionality, making them a very important nanomaterial for various applications. Considerable effort has been devoted to improving electrospinning efficiency, controlling nanofiber structure, and finding their unique property and novel application. From the initial study that used a simple needle-based electrospinning setup, electrospinning has entered a new era of mass production from needleless apparatus and nonweb fibrous structure-like nanofiber yarns. This chapter provides an overview of electrospinning, its brief history, physical principle, advanced electrospinning setups, and functional applications. The advantages of electrospinning and nanofibers, their structures, and functionalities are discussed in detail.

There are various potential application areas of nanofibers due to those advantageous properties. Among all nanofiber production methods, electrospinning is the most dominant one thanks to its wide polymer range, reproducibility, ease of production, suitability for different set-up modifications, and mass production potential [2]. In a conventional electrospinning set-up, a needle is used to feed the solution.

Fiber morphology, e.g., fiber diameter, orientation, rugosity and surface defects, can be modified by adjusting the spinning parameters. These parameters include (i) the properties of the solution such as viscosity, elasticity, conductivity and surface tension, (ii) technical variables such as hydrostatic pressure in the capillary tube, the electrical potential at the tip of the spinning nozzle, and the working distance (distance between the nozzle tip and the collector), and (iii) environmental parameters such as solution temperature, humidity and air velocity in the electrospinning chamber [181,182]. Electrospinning has several advantages over other techniques used to prepare fibers, including the simplicity of the spinning apparatus, high production rate, low cost, control over fiber diameter and microstructure, and the diversity of materials manufactured into fibers [183].

In this regard, nanofibers – possessing a high specific surface area- can provide an excellent carrier for silver nanoparticles. Nanofibers have been widely utilized in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering as they possess several advantageous features [18,19]. Undeniably, besides their chemical compositions, a wound dressing's physical structure can greatly impact the wound healing process.
