Abstract

Many fundamental problems exist in the development and implementation of computer-integrated manufacturing information systems: for example, lack of integration, islands of automation, sub-optimization of resources, inability to migrate to future technology. Moreover, few methodologies have been developed for dealing with these issues. In this paper we outline an information engineering approach to plan, design and implement this class information systems, which addresses many of the fundamental problems.

This decision aid is a challenging and key problem, as wafers fabrication plants are extremely complex manufacturing processes [1] and their efficiency relies on Information System (IS) and IT [2].1 In the field of industrial engineering research, links between IS and firms’ operations efficiency are studied [5,6] and research is carried out to improve modelling practices linking IS and enterprise activity [7–9]. Regarding STMicroelectronics, this paper is rather focused on IT, which main technical domains are applications and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) platforms (including IT hardware) [10].

      Citation Excerpt :

However as mills’ requirements for information systems are diverse and IT develops rapidly, the information systems in industry field becomes more complicated which indeed sets barriers in getting comprehensive energy information. In fact, present production information systems are multi-vendor based and heterogeneous, such as process control, automatic metering, supervisory control and production management [7,8]. The independence, distribution and heterogeneity of these systems result in the “information island”, and this makes it difficult to get the accurate and transparent energy information in a global perspective.
