Summary

A serial reconstruction of the chondriome ofPleurochrysis carterae (Braarudet Fagerland) Christensen has revealed a single, reticulated mitochondrion branching throughout the cell. The occurrence of a single mitochondrion in unicellular algae is briefly reviewed and its phylogenetic significance is discussed.
